Expanding Homewood Training's Specialist Programs: Understanding Barriers and Solutions

Homewood Training's commitment to delivering real employment outcomes requires a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by each of our priority groups. We work with SMEs to ensure that we meet people where they are to ensure successful and lasting outcomes. Only by understanding the barriers for each specialist group can we create and implement effective solutions for them within the UK employment landscape.

Understanding Barriers and Support Strategies

Service leavers possess valuable skills but face challenges translating their military experience to civilian employment contexts.

Military-to-civilian skills translation

  • Acknowledge the difficulty in translating military skills to civilian terminology.

  • Develop sector-specific CV translation workshops for each of Homewood's specialist industries.

  • Create skills mapping tools that align military qualifications with industry requirements.

Tailored support based on service duration

  • Recognise different needs based on length of service, aligning with CTP service tiers.

  • Provide complementary support to existing CTP programmes rather than duplication.

  • Offer enhanced industry-specific training, building on the CTP foundation.

Civilian workplace culture adjustment

  • Acknowledge the cultural shift from military to civilian workplaces.

  • Provide transition coaching focusing on communication styles and workplace dynamics.

  • Create peer discussion groups led by successfully transitioned veterans.

Physical and mental health considerations

  • Implement training approaches sensitive to potential PTSD or other service-related conditions.

  • Ensure physical accessibility of training for those with service-related injuries.

  • Provide specific support for those medically discharged who face significant barriers to employment.

Employer education

  • Help employers understand the unique value proposition of armed forces leavers.

  • Highlight transferable skills such as leadership, problem-solving, and working under pressure.

  • Create "military-friendly" employer networks within Homewood's industry specialisations.

Homewood Training can truly deliver on its commitment to transform employment training into real, sustainable employment outcomes. The specialised approach for each group ensures that Homewood Training's commitment to delivering people who are "ready to work" is achieved through addressing the unique challenges each participant faces, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution.
