Expanding Homewood Training's Specialist Programs: Understanding Barriers and Solutions

Homewood Training's commitment to delivering real employment outcomes requires a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by each of our priority groups. We work with SMEs to ensure that we meet people where they are to ensure successful and lasting outcomes. Only by understanding the barriers for each specialist group can we create and implement effective solutions for them within the UK employment landscape.

Understanding barriers and support strategies

With 872,000 young people in the UK not in education, employment or training, this group faces particular challenges in today's labour market.

Addressing skills and experience gaps

  • Recognise that 44% of young people cite a lack of skills or training as their biggest barrier to employment.

  • Create industry-specific skills training aligned with current employer requirements.

  • Develop work experience components within training programmes.

Mental health support integration

  • Acknowledge that 31% of young people report having a mental health condition.

  • Recognise that 85% of those believe their condition affects their ability to find or function in work.

  • Incorporate mental health awareness and resilience training throughout programs.

  • Provide accessible referral pathways to specialised support services.

Entry-level wage viability

  • Address the challenges of low wages in entry-level positions that deter engagement.

  • Provide financial planning support for sustainable employment.

  • Focus on employers offering genuine progression pathways.

Workplace expectations guidance

  • Recognise that young people may have limited understanding of workplace norms.

  • Provide workplace culture and expectations training.

  • Develop soft skills training including communication, teamwork and time management.

Pathway visibility

  • Acknowledge that 62% of young people believe finding jobs is harder now than it was ten years ago.

  • Create clear visualisations of career progression within Homewood's specialist sectors.

  • Utilise successful graduates as peer mentors and role models.

  • Develop taster sessions for various industry pathways to enable informed choices.

Homewood Training can truly deliver on its commitment to transform employment training into real, sustainable employment outcomes. The specialised approach for each group ensures that Homewood Training's commitment to delivering people who are "ready to work" is achieved through addressing the unique challenges each participant faces, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution.
